Accelerated Reader Program
“We can’t wait to Accelerate!”
The Accelerated Reader Program is available to students in grades 4-8. The program continues to develop, evolve and elicit a great deal of student enthusiasm. We have enhanced the basic program with the addition of Accelerated Vocabulary quizzes and the STAR Program to identify individual reading levels.
Our Accelerated Reader Program includes thousands of qualifying titles. After reading their personal selection, each student takes a computerized test. Each title is assigned a designated point level dependent on the vocabulary level and length of the book. For example, Encyclopedia Brown may be only one point while Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is worth 44 points. Suppose a student scores 80% on the Harry Potter test, then they would earn 80% of the 44 points. Student points accumulate throughout the year and are rewarded with incentives such as bookmarks, pencils, a jeans day and free books. Three times a year we have our Treasure Chest drawings in which students can earn chances on donated prizes such as stuffed animals, books, jewelry and sporting goods.
The incentives are an integral component of the program but far more valuable is the love of reading that we always see develop. The students are anxious to challenge themselves and very often refer books to each other…and to their teachers. The teachers commonly take the AR tests, too. We are constantly updating our quiz base to reflect our library collection, classroom libraries and student requests.
Accelerated Reader has been integrated into our Reading curriculum but it is not at all unusual to see students taking a book to the cafeteria or choosing to read during recess. Parents have commented that their children read much more at home than before they began the program and have even been known to forsake the television for a book. Parents receive quarterly reports on their child’s progress.
This program is a collaborative effort of our head “cheerleader” Mrs. Hokaj in the Library, Mr. Schroeck for his technological support , all of our dedicated reading teachers and Miss Morgan as the coordinator. We are grateful for the parents and teachers who continue to make book and incentive donations to the program. It is heartwarming that teachers from so many curriculum areas avidly support our literacy program. A very special note of appreciation to the P.T.O. for their continued financial and moral support.
Reading feeds the brain and we find our students excitedly making “healthy” choices and having so much fun while engrossed in a good book. Happy Reading!
